Suzy’s mother was in fact heading out the door as Jane came in, and they almost collided.
Jane said hello and introduced herself, and Suzy’s mother, after looking blank for a few seconds, smiled distractedly and said, “Oh, that’s right, you’re the one who’s going to be working with us this summer. Great! Well, I hope we’ll get a chance to chat later on. I have to run to the store. The ravenous hordes have eaten almost all the refreshments already and I’d better get some more before they start on the furniture. My husband’s in there somewhere. He’ll be the one with the stunned look on his face and his hands over his ears.”
She hurried off. Jane decided that she would enjoy working with Suzy’s mom.
